Description

Rock Cottage is a cottage located on a street corner in Ringmore, dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. The building is rendered, likely on a cob tarred plinth, and features a thatched roof. It consists of two sections; the lower part adjoins Wychwood, while the higher section returns at the corner to adjoin Rose Cottage.

The lower section has two storeys, with the left side featuring a two-light small pane casement window in an eyebrow shape above a similar window at ground level. Between the window and the door, there is a projecting buttress made of rubble. In the re-entrant angle to the right, there is a slated lean-to porch with a peaked head supported by posts at the front, which has a 20th-century glazed door, likely leading to a cross-passage.

The higher section has a hipped end facing the road, with a four-pane sash window at ground level and a stepped square stack at the outer corner. The return front has two storeys with two windows; at ground level, there is a blocked opening with a drip-stone above, followed by a pent-roof enclosed porch over a plank door, and a two-light glazing-bar casement beneath a 'floating' drip course. The first floor features two small two-light glazing bar casements with slight eyebrows. There is a brick stack on the right gable.

The interior is not accessible for viewing. Notably, the position of the stack is unusual. The cottage's name comes from its construction directly on rock, which is exposed above street level.
