Description
The Retreat is a detached cottage, originally two separate units, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of limewashed rubble with a thatched roof. The building consists of two sections, with the right section having a lower ridge line, which may have been a former farm unit attached to the house.
The cottage is two storeys high and features an irregular arrangement of windows, with two sets of two-light casements on the ground floor. These are situated to the left of a 20th-century glazed door that is sheltered by a thatched hood, followed by two wide-spaced two-light casements, all of which have small panes. On the first floor, there are two sets of two-light casements, one of which has a horizontal bar, located beneath slight eyebrow dormers.
To the left of the building is a large external chimney stack, and there is a ridge stack at the point where the ridge level changes, both of which are raised in a smaller square section. The rear of the cottage has 20th-century extensions that are not of special interest, featuring three two-light casements and a section that sweeps down. Although the interior is not accessible, it has been reported to contain a bressumer fire at the right end.
