Description
The barn and malthouse located to the northeast of Bigbury Court Hotel is a structure with origins possibly dating back to the 17th century, while the main section is from the 18th century with significant work from the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble and features corrugated iron roofs.
The long unit runs east-west with gabled ends, sloping down towards the north. At the south end, there is a two-storey unit with a very steep hipped roof that abuts the churchyard. The hipped barn has plain walls and a two-light opening on the north side. The long unit has a gable at the south end, showing signs of an earlier, lower roof line, and includes a wide door beneath a loading opening.
On the side facing the house, there are several openings, including four doors, three of which have brick segmental heads, and two small trefoil lancets located at the right end. The top gable features a wide loading opening above a broad segmental-headed opening that is partially buried by the rising ground level. Towards the east, there are additional openings and two small blocked stone-lined openings.
Inside, the structure contains some large chamfered transverse beams with later flooring. The former malthouse has bins at a lower level and part of its upper level is lined with timber framing. The roofs are supported by 19th-century scissors roof trusses.
