Description
The gate piers, gate, and walls at the east entrance to St Lawrence were built in 1873, although the cappings may date from the 18th century. The structure features coursed, thin bedded stone and consists of two square piers measuring approximately 750 mm by 3.5 meters high overall. These piers have heavy moulded cappings topped with large granite ball finials. The walls are ogee quadrant style, leading to saddle-back copings at a height of about 6 meters, and are connected to the square piers with cappings, spanning approximately 13 meters in width. There is a pair of 19th century cast iron gates at the main entrance, along with a smaller matching pedestrian gate to the right. An inscription in the church indicates that the piers were relocated from Whitecross for this purpose.
