Description

Start Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and likely cob, topped with an asbestos tile roof featuring gabled ends. The building has gable end stacks, with the right-hand stack having a short later brick shaft and the left-hand stack being truncated.

The cottage is positioned at an angle to the road and has a two-room plan with the entrance located to the right of the center, likely leading to a cross or through passage with a porch at the front. The larger room on the left side was probably the kitchen. At the back left, there is a 20th-century bungalow that is in separate ownership.

The exterior is two stories high and has an asymmetrical two-window range. On the first floor, there are two small early 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor features two large late 19th-century or 20th-century three-light casements, also with glazing bars, all supported by wooden lintels. To the right of the center, there is a large rendered porch (possibly cob) with a scantle slate roof; the gable is weatherboarded and has a 20th-century plank door, though the inner door was not inspected. Additionally, there is a 19th-century two-light casement on the right-hand gable end. A 20th-century bungalow adjoins the back to the right. The interior was not accessible during the survey in 1988.
