Description

Rill House is a former workhouse, now a private house, dated 1822 and likely converted into a residence in the 20th century. The building is constructed of local slate rubble and features an asbestos tile roof with gabled ends. There are two lateral stacks at the back, one truncated and the other with a rendered and heightened shaft topped with yellow clay louvred pots.

The house has a rectangular plan, though the original internal layout is uncertain. It appears to have two rooms at the back, each with lateral fireplaces, and a central entrance at the front. In the 20th century, a large extension was added to the rear.

The exterior consists of three storeys and presents a symmetrical three-window front, with the windows and doorway slightly displaced to the right. The small window openings, which are smaller at the top, feature cambered stone arches, slate sills, and late 19th or 20th century two-light casements with glazing bars. The central second-floor window has a keystone inscribed '1822 W.A.'. The central doorway contains a 20th-century glazed door and canopy. The right-hand end of the building abuts Brook Cottage, while the left-hand end has a 20th-century glazed door on the right, a two-light casement to the left, and a small 20th-century window in the gable. At the rear, there is a two-storey slate-hung extension from the 20th century.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that there are lateral fireplaces at the back of each room, one featuring a cambered timber lintel and the other with a brick arch. It is said that the building was constructed from the rent of the curate's house, now known as Old Walls.
