Description

Mingoes is a house likely dating from the 16th century or earlier, significantly remodelled in the 18th century and with some 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of roughcast stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and has a plain tile roof with hipped ends. The lower left end has lower eaves. There are rendered axial and two rear lateral stacks, with slate weathering and yellow clay louvred pots.

The original plan was likely for two or three rooms. The lower (east) room on the left is divided axially, housing a kitchen at the rear heated by a rear lateral stack and an outhouse at the front with a front doorway. A short cross-passage connects the front to the kitchen, and the hall’s axial stack backs onto the kitchen and passage. There may have been an inner room heated from a rear lateral stack at the upper end.

In the 18th century, the house was extensively remodelled and extended by one unheated room at the upper right end. The putative inner room was divided to create a small parlour at the rear and a small entrance hall at the front, from which a straight staircase rises. An axial passage, partitioned from the front of the former hall, leads from the entrance hall to the lower left end. This axial passage is lined with cupboards at the front. The eaves were raised, and the roof entirely rebuilt during the 18th century.

The north front is long and asymmetrical, with three windows, featuring 2-light casements with glazing bars dating to the 19th and 20th centuries. A doorway to the right of centre has a 19th-century flush panel and glazed door, protected by a wooden lattice porch. There are also doorways towards the left end and a wider doorway to its left, both with 19th-century plank doors. The east end wall has two 20th-century casements and slate sills. The right-hand end has a circa late 19th-century casement on the first floor and two other 20th-century casements and a mounting block.

The rear (south) elevation is asymmetrical, breaking forward on the left by a lateral stack and another on the right. It features circa late 18th or early 19th-century 2 and 3-light casements with small panes.

Much of the 18th and early 19th-century joinery remains inside, including a good set of 2-panel doors around the entrance hall. The parlour has a small 19th-century chimneypiece. The axial passage contains 19th-century fitted cupboards. There are early 19th-century panelled window shutters. The kitchen features a fireplace with brackets to the mantle shelf. The straight staircase has shaped split balusters at the top. On the first floor is a complete set of 18th-century fielded 2-panel doors and a good dentilled chimneypiece in the hall chamber.

The roof is circa 18th century, with halved lapped and pegged collars on the face of straight principals. A blade of truss by the hall stack might be blackened.
