Description

Prospect House is a house built around 1830-1835, with a 20th-century addition. It is covered in stucco, likely over slate rubble, and features a slate hipped roof with deep eaves and moulded cast-iron gutters marked with lion motifs on the joists. The house has pairs of octagonal chimney stacks, with the right stack having turned red clay pots and the left stack featuring louvred yellow clay pots.

The layout consists of a double-depth plan with two main front rooms, a central entrance and stair hall, and service rooms at the back. In the mid to late 20th century, a two-storey, one-bay extension was added to the left (west) side of the house.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay south front. The right and left bays project forward, featuring rusticated quoins, while the centre of these bays has canted bays on the ground floor. The first floor has 19th-century 16-pane sash windows on the left and right, and a large 20th-century sash window in the central recess, all equipped with louvred shutters. The ground floor has flanking canted stuccoed bays with slate hipped roofs, moulded cast-iron gutters, and 19th-century French casements with glazing bars. The central recess contains a round-headed doorway with a 19th-century moulded and panelled door, topped by a semi-circular fanlight, all enclosed in a 20th-century flat roof porch.

To the left (west) is the 20th-century two-storey, one-bay extension with a canted front and flat roof. The rear elevation is roughly rendered and features 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars and a central doorway. The interior was not accessible during the survey in 1988-1989, but it likely retains 19th-century joinery, including the staircase and doors, as well as possible plasterwork and a chimneypiece.
