Description

Brook Cottage is a house, likely dating from the 18th century, that has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was probably originally a pair of cottages. The construction is painted slate rubble with an asbestos slate roof and gabled ends. The house has gable end stacks; the right-hand stack is red brick and has been heightened, while the left-hand stack features a tall stone rubble shaft with set-offs, a weathered cap, and a yellow clay pot. The building’s plan is uncertain – it may have begun as a two-room house with gable end stacks converted into a pair of cottages in the 19th century, then reunited into one house in the 20th century. Alternatively, it might have been a pair of single-room cottages originally converted into one house in the 20th century. The front of the house is asymmetrical, with two windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. The first floor has two late 19th or early 20th century windows with glazing bars and slate sills. The ground floor features a late 19th century three-light casement window to the left and right, a late 19th century two-light casement within a blocked doorway in the center, and a 20th century glazed door with a 20th century canopy to the left. The rear elevation has not been inspected. The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain blocked fireplaces and 20th century replacement ceiling joists.
