Description
Fort Cottage is a house dating from around the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from painted slatestone rubble and has an asbestos slate roof with ridge tiles; the left side features a gable end while the right side is hipped. There is a gable end stack with a rubble shaft and a shaped top on the left, while the stack on the right has been removed. The house has a two-room plan with a nearly central entrance, leading to a room on the right and another on the left, both originally heated by end stacks. The entrance passage is unusually wide, and a straight stair was added in the 19th century.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical two-window front. On both the ground and first floors, there are late 19th-century four-pane sash windows on the left and right. Off-centre to the right is a 20th-century half-glazed door with an overlight, set within a 20th-century porch that was under construction at the time of the survey in December 1987. There is a small two-pane window for the cellar at the left end, and the ground floor has a 20th-century four-pane window to the right, with a smaller window above on the first floor. The external stack shows slate weathering on the left side. The right end features a small 20th-century window on the ground floor and a 20th-century two-light casement on the first floor. At the rear, there are a 20th-century two-light casement on the ground floor and a smaller one above, along with a 20th-century plank door to the cellar on the right. The interior has not been fully inspected, but the room on the right has 19th-century ceiling beams, while the room on the left is ceiled. The house appears to have undergone significant alterations in the mid to late 19th century.
