Description

Maple Cottage is a house that was originally divided into two cottages but has since been reunited into one dwelling. It likely dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features a steeply-pitched roof made of corrugated asbestos sheet with gabled ends. There are internal gable end stacks with short shafts; the right-hand stack has a small yellow clay pot, while the left-hand stack has been heightened in brick and features a slate-on-edge cowl.

The original layout was probably a small two-room plan house with a central cross-passage, where the lower left room was likely the kitchen. During the 19th century, the eaves may have been raised, the house was divided into two cottages, and a staircase was inserted into the passage. The exterior is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical front. On the first floor, there are two 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century two-light casement on the right and a three-light casement on the left, both with glazing bars, along with a 20th-century window to the right of the center, likely where a doorway was blocked. The doorway to the left of center features a late 19th-century glazed and flush panel door. The interior has not been inspected, but closely-spaced cross-beams are visible in both ground floor rooms.
