Description
Lower Woods Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with some minor alterations and additions made in the mid to late 20th century. The building is rendered, likely over stone rubble and cob, and features a gable-ended asbestos-slate roof. There is a rubble stack with weatherings and a 19th-century brick top stage located at the right-hand gable end.
The cottage faces south and has a layout that includes a principal large room on the right with an integral end stack and an entrance at its left-hand end. To the left, there is a present kitchen and pantry, separated by a longitudinal wall. A 20th-century porch and a late 20th-century single-storey addition are also found on the left side. The cottage is two storeys high.
The exterior displays a symmetrical front with three windows on the first floor and two windows on the ground floor. The right side features late 19th-century three-light wooden casements, while the centre and left have 20th-century two-light wooden casements. A central old boarded door, possibly from the 18th century, serves as the main entrance.
Inside, the right-hand ground-floor room has a plastered chamfered cross beam and an 18th-century cupboard to the right of a blocked fireplace. This cupboard consists of two doors with raised and fielded panels and a single door above with two raised and fielded panels. There is an old boarded door with strap hinges between the kitchen and pantry, and a dog-leg winder staircase located in the left-hand rear corner of the right-hand room. The roof space has not been inspected.
