Description

Lyddon's Cottage is a farmhouse that dates from the mid-17th century and was later remodeled in the late 19th century. The building features rendered stone rubble and cob on the first floor, with a gable-ended scantle-slate roof and stone stacks that have 19th-century brick shafts at the gable ends. The original 17th-century layout consists of a three-room plan facing southeast, with an unheated central room and a passage in front. The end rooms have external end stacks. There are two dog-leg staircases: one in the right-hand room and another in the central room, which has its foot in the left-hand room; at least one of these staircases likely dates from when the house was divided. The eaves were probably raised during this alteration as well.

The exterior is nearly symmetrical with a three-window front featuring 19th-century three-light wooden casements, which have segmental heads on the ground floor. There are two segmental-headed 19th-century boarded doors located between the windows on the left and right. Raking stone buttresses are positioned to the left of the right-hand door and to the right of the right-hand window.

Inside, the ground-floor end rooms have ovolo-moulded cross beams with scroll stops, and the left-hand room also features a chamfered half beam. An old boarded door with H-L hinges is located at the foot of the stairs in the right-hand room. The first-floor rooms and roof space have not been inspected.
