Description
Higher Chilton is a farmhouse that dates from the late 17th century, with a possible core from the 16th century, and was remodeled in the early 19th century. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks and a plastered brick chimney shaft, all topped by a thatched roof. The house has a three-room-and-cross-passage plan that faces east. The passage now contains a 19th-century stair, and the two rooms to the right are separated by an axial stack. The room to the left has a disused stack projecting from the end wall. A rear service block at the back of the left room was demolished in 1952.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a regular four-window front with late 19th-century and replacement 20th-century pine casements, all featuring glazing bars. Most windows are three-light casements, except for a two-light example located over the front door, which is to the left of center. The door itself is from the 20th century, and the roof is hipped at both ends.
Inside, the interior reflects a superficial refurbishment from the 19th century, but the rooms on either side of the entrance showcase late 17th-century square-sectioned crossbeams that are exposed. The room to the right of the entrance boasts an enormous volcanic ashlar fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel. The first floor includes some late 17th-century doors that are hung on H hinges with trefoil finials. The intact late 17th-century roof consists of five bays supported by tie beam trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
