Description

The Forge is a house dating from the 18th century, with a late 19th-century forge added to the rear. The house features painted and rendered cob, while the forge has stone timber-laced rubble walls. The roof is hipped and covered with asbestos slate, although it was originally thatched. The eaves slightly project, and there is a continuous rear outshut and a lean-to at the north-north-east end. The building has an inserted lateral stack at the rear left and an original external stack at the rear right, with a forge flue added in the late 19th century.

The layout consists of a two-room central stair plan, a one-room forge extending the full length of the rear, and a one-room addition to the north-north-east. The original part of the house has two storeys and features a nearly symmetrical, two-window front facing east-south-east. The doorway, located off-centre to the right, has a top-glazed 20th-century door and a 20th-century gable hood. The windows include wide 19th-century, three-light casements, except for a narrower two-light casement on the ground floor to the left. There is also a small shuttered opening on the ground floor to the right, which may have served as a food hutch.

The forge has sash windows with random panes of overlapping glass. Inside the house, each room contains a roughly chamfered cross beam. There is a curious rounded niche in the left room, possibly where machinery was fitted, and another niche located between the window and door. The building is included for its group value.
