Description
Stockleigh House is a circa 1840s rectory, now a private house, that has been altered in the later 19th century and extended around 1958. The walls are stuccoed, with a hipped dry slate roof featuring wide eaves supported by paired brackets and brick chimneys positioned over the original rear wall and at the rear of a wing. The original layout likely comprised two rooms and a central staircase; this has been altered to include a staircase to the rear, to the left, and a double-depth rear wing, partly from the 1958 extension. The west front is symmetrical, with three windows. A central arched sash window with intersecting glazing bars occupies the former doorway, fitted with folding louvred shutters. Flanking this are 16-pane hornless sashes with horizontal sliding louvred shutters, and 12-pane hornless sashes to the first floor, all with concealed boxes and some crown glass. The north side entrance features two unfluted Doric columns in antis supporting an open pediment on consoles, above a 6-panel door with a marginal glazed overlight and a 12-pane hornless sash window above. Most other windows are 12- or 16-pane sashes. The interior includes a dog-leg staircase with a wreathed mahogany handrail over an octagonal newel and stick balusters, believed to be a later Victorian addition. Some panelled doors are potentially original, but the moulded ceiling bands are thought to be later insertions.
