Description

This milestone, located approximately 6 metres east of Mary Cross, dates from the early 19th century. It is a painted granite block that is triangular in section, measuring about 600 mm high and 450 mm on each side, with a slightly saddled top. The milestone is inscribed with directions, indicating distances to Dartmoor (16 miles) and Modbury (half a mile). Originally, the Modbury to Dartmouth turnpike passed through Brawnston but was re-routed south of there in the 1820s or 1830s.
