Description
The gateway and steps located approximately 15 meters south of Old Traine and West Cottage are possibly from the 16th century. They are constructed from rubble with a dressed granite archway and steps. The wall is about 4 meters wide and 4.5 meters high, topped with slate coping. The wall steps down about 1 meter on either side, extending to a projecting outbuilding on the right and to the full width of the main building on the left, returning to the west end of the lane.
In the higher section of the wall, there is an opening made of dressed granite featuring a broad chamfer to stopped plinth blocks and a four-centred arch. This arch is set flush with the wall and contains a pair of decorative wrought iron gates. The gates are approached by a set of seven steps arranged in a pyramid shape. To the left, there is a mounting block attached to the lower section of the wall.
The wall and gateway enclose the frontage of the main manor house, which has been divided into two dwellings, Old Traine and West Cottage. It is possible that the structure has been re-set and rebuilt using the original materials. The approach yard is paved with cobbles.
