Description
The gateway, wall, and railings to North Traine are a late 19th-century feature located on the west side of Brownston Street in Modbury. The structure includes railings on a dwarf wall, a gateway, and a boundary wall, constructed from rendered rubble and cast iron. The railings, which span the full width of the property, have fleur-de-lys terminals and connect to the colonnade of Trayne House on the left and the gateway on the right. The railings are set atop a dwarf wall with bold ogee-curve coping. At the right end, there is a gateway with grooved rendering that contains an arched opening with a keystone and a well-crafted two-panel round-headed door. Above the moulded cornice, there are three blocking pieces in a Greek style. Connecting the gateway to the front of the house is a short section of wall approximately 2 meters high, which is grooved and topped with a curved cast iron railing about 600 mm high. The walling to the right of the gateway is not considered of special interest. These elements are significant to the overall character of the street.
