Description
Silverwell Reservoir is a reservoir wall built in 1705. It is constructed from granite and measures approximately 6.50 meters in length and 2.5 meters in height. The wall is made of well-squared and coursed granite, with quoins and a small chamfered plinth that is mostly hidden beneath the 20th-century road surface, although it is visible at the right end. The top of the wall is overgrown, and there is no coping visible.
The wall features two openings with cambered lintels that are chamfered to stops on the jambs. Each opening has cast iron doors that are banded and padlocked, measuring around 700 millimeters wide and 850 millimeters high, set about 1.25 meters above road level. This structure is all that remains of the reservoir created in 1705, which utilized water from the Silverwell and supplied three conduits located in the main streets. Although much of the reservoir was intact until the mid-1980s, the area has since been developed. The reservoir wall holds special historical significance.
