Description

This is a farmhouse, likely dating to around 1837, as indicated by a date on a nearby barn. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble and has a slate roof. It is a broad, double-depth gabled building with a central entrance on its north-east gable end and another centrally on its north-west wall. The building has two storeys and a partial basement. The north-east gable end features a central 16-pane sash window above a partly glazed door, both set in deep reveals, and protected by an open gabled hood. A small casement window is located to the right. A flight of steps leads down to a splendid nail-head plank door on the left side. The rear elevation has three windows; the ground floor has three-light glazing bar casement windows flanking a central 4-panel flush door, above which is a 5-pane transom light. The first floor has two-light glazing bar casement windows. The front of the farmhouse has three 16-pane horned sash windows, with a 12-pane window in the centre of the ground floor, which likely replaced a former door. There are also three small basement openings. Large brick gable stacks were added in the late 19th century. A cottage situated at a right angle to the south-west gable end is not considered to be of particular architectural interest. The interior includes a slate-floored entrance hall with a straight run stick baluster staircase featuring Doric newels, along with some panelled shutters and replacement fireplaces. A flight of stone steps leads to the basement.
