Description
Higher Kestle Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the early to mid-19th century, with few later alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with brick dressings, while the front and left side are rendered. The roof is slate, featuring ridge tiles and gable ends, with gable end stacks that have rendered shafts.
The farmhouse has a double depth plan, with a central entrance. The principal rooms are located to the front left and right, each heated from a gable end stack. The kitchen is situated at the rear left, and dairies are at the rear right, with a stair hall in the rear center. There is also a narrow wing on the right side that contains a bathroom.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-window front. All windows are 19th-century 16-pane sashes with cambered arches. The central entrance has a 19th-century four-panelled door and an open-fronted wooden porch with a flat roof and unglazed sidelights. The right end has a two-storey addition for a bathroom, while the left end is blind. At the rear, the first floor has two 19th-century 16-pane sashes on the left and one on the right, along with a central 19th-century 12-pane sash with margin glazing and a round arch that lights the stair. The ground floor features two 19th-century two-light 8-pane casements with iron stanchions on the left and one 19th-century 16-pane sash on the right. All windows have cambered brick arches and brick jambs. Off-center to the right is a 19th-century porch with a hipped roof, a nine-pane window at the rear, and a door on the left side.
The interior has not been inspected but may retain good plain features from the 19th century.
