Description

Galowras Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an attached front wall, dating to approximately the early 18th century, with additions from the later 18th century and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main structure is built of slatestone rubble, with the front being slate-hung. It has a slurried scantle slate roof, hipped in shape, with ridge tiles, and brick chimney shafts on the left and right sides. The attached front wall is also of slatestone rubble with rubble coping. The original layout was a double-depth plan with a central entrance, a parlour to the left and a kitchen to the right, each heated by an end stack. A stair hall is situated to the rear left, and an unheated dairy is to the rear right. A one-room plan kitchen addition was added to the rear left, probably later in the 18th century.

The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window front, two stories high. All windows are 20th-century 3-light, 8-pane casements. A 20th-century gabled porch sits centrally, with a 19th-century 6-panelled door inside. The front wall features a triangular arch over a plank door on the left side, and a central 2-centred arched doorway supported by a brick arch and hollow stone ball finials, with a plank door. The left end of the house is blank. The kitchen addition to the left has an external stack with a curved oven at the base and a 2-light, 6-pane casement window in the loft. The right end features an oven projection at the base of the stack, a 2-light, 6-pane casement to the dairy, and a 19th-century 6-pane sash window above. A small 2-pane window is located in the loft at the rear. The kitchen addition to the right has a stable-type plank door and a 2-light, 2-pane casement with a segmental brick arch. A small lean-to is set in the angle to the left.

Inside, the entrance passage features 18th-century plank and muntin screen partition walls on either side, and early 18th-century 2-panelled doors. The room to the right has 18th-century moulded ceiling beams. Each room has a 20th-century end fireplace. A similar screen partition wall is located at the rear of the room to the right. The dairy contains an 18th-century 2-panelled door with a ventilator grille, a brick floor, and slate shelves. There is also a winder stair with stick balusters, and a cupboard under the stair with an 18th-century 2-panelled door. The rear kitchen has an open fireplace with a timber lintel, a cloam oven with a cast iron door, and a ladder providing access to the loft. On the first floor, three rooms are present, originally divided by similar screen partitions, each with an early 18th-century 2-panelled door. One of the rear rooms has been partitioned in the 20th century.
