Description
Trethewey Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with some alterations made around the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of slate rubble, with the right-hand west end partially rendered. It features a grouted scantle slate roof topped with red clay ridge tiles. There are brick stacks over the right-hand gable end, as well as rebuilt brick shafts over the front and back of the left-hand gable.
The farmhouse has a double depth plan, with shallow service rooms at the back. The two main front rooms are approximately the same size and are heated by gable end stacks. A central entrance passage leads to a staircase and a dairy behind the right-hand room, while a larger kitchen is located behind the left-hand room. In the late 19th century, porches were added to both the front and rear entrances of the passages.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical three-window south front. The three small openings on the first floor have late 19th-century four-pane sashes with slate cills. The two larger ground floor windows have flat red brick arches and slate cills; the left-hand window retains its original 16-pane sash, while the right-hand window has a late 19th-century four-pane sash that is slightly larger than the first-floor windows. The central doorway includes a late 19th-century four-panel door and a glazed wooden gabled porch with a wooden finial.
The rear elevation showcases late 19th-century sashes and casements, along with a central late 19th-century red brick porch. The interior of the farmhouse has remained virtually unaltered since the 19th century. Internal partitions are made of vertical planks, and the original 19th-century four-panel doors are still in place. The ceilings feature exposed joists. The front left-hand room has a 20th-century tiled chimney-piece, while the right-hand room has a 20th-century range inserted. The straight staircase in the rear stairhall has stick balusters, although the lower part of the balustrade has been removed. The panelled doors on the first floor are intact.
