Description

Harraton Farmhouse is a 17th and 18th century farmhouse, with later modifications. It is constructed of rubble with slate and asbestos-cement slate roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a two-storey porch representing a cross passage. To the left of the porch is a four-light casement with horizontal bars, positioned beneath a 20th-century plastic casement set within a half-gable. The porch features a three-light casement with an ovolo-mould lintel above a chamfered round arch covering an inner plank door with an ovolo-mould surround. To the right of the porch is another four-light casement with horizontal bars, alongside a small casement positioned under a plastic casement in a half-gable. The right return side is plain, incorporating some brick walling and a single-storey lean-to, leading to a lower hipped wing with a 16-pane sash window, likely dating to the 19th century, which creates a U-shaped plan. The main wing is gabled, with a swept-down section above a projection, believed to be a staircase turret in the internal angle. The windows are small-pane casements. The roof of the main block sweeps down over the door leading to the cross passage, which includes a transom light. There are two large stone stacks – one at the ridge to the left of the cross passage, and one to the right gable. The interior is not accessible, but is reported to contain chamfered spine beams with run-out stops in the kitchen, an early fireplace, and a parlour fireplace which has been replaced.
