Description
The barn and shippon adjoining South Hole Farmhouse date from the 18th century or earlier, with the horse-engine house added in the 19th century. The barn features roughly dressed stone at the left end, while the rest is constructed of stone and cob, topped with a hipped slate roof. The shippon is built of rubble and also has a slate roof. The barn and shippon are arranged in an L-shape, with the left gable end of the shippon adjoining the farmhouse, creating two sides of a rear courtyard.
The barn includes a large doorway with a chamfered surround and run-out stops, featuring original double plank doors that lead to the threshing floor. The horse-engine house projects at right angles above the doorway and has splayed ends, with a massive horizontal winding beam still in place. The roof trusses of the barn have been replaced. The shippon has two plank doors on the left side and five stable doors on the right.
