Description

The building is a barn, shippon, and horse-engine house located immediately north-north east of South Ash Farmhouse, likely dating from the 18th century with early and later 19th-century additions. It is constructed of stone rubble with cob under the eaves, and is patched in concrete blocks. The roofs are made of corrugated iron, featuring both half-hipped and hipped designs.

The layout includes a barn with a central threshing floor, a 19th-century horse-engine house at the back of the left end, and an early 19th-century shippon with a loft above on the left end. The later 19th-century outshut on the right end has been partly rebuilt.

On the exterior, the barn features a central full-height cart entrance with projecting stone jambs that support an eaves canopy. There is a large raking buttress on the left and a doorway on the right with a loft door above under the eaves. The shippon, set back on the left, is built of cob on a stone rubble plinth and has ground floor and loft doorways in one full-height opening; its left end wall has a tall triangular opening. The main roof extends down as a catslide over the outshut, which is partly rebuilt in concrete blocks. At the rear, there is a central cart entrance with projecting jambs and an open-sided horse-engine house on the right, supported by wooden posts, some of which have been replaced.

The interior features a wood plank threshing floor. The roof has straight principal rafters that are halved and pegged at the apex, with later lapped collars. The engine house contains lapped nailed collars, a missing beam, and an inserted wooden partition. The shippon includes wooden mangers and a pitched stone floor.
