Description

Smitha Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been altered in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is constructed from roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. The building features a brick chimney at the rear lateral hall stack and another brick stack at the right end.

The layout includes a hall and an inner room to the right of a former through-passage, which has been modified by blocking up the front doorway and adding an axial partition to create a small front dairy and a stair hall at the rear. There is a second staircase running from back to front between the hall and the inner room. The lower end of the farmhouse was originally a lofted outbuilding but has been reduced to a single storey, with its front wall rebuilt in the 20th century. At right angles to the rear of the main range is a lofted stable range, with the front portion incorporated into the dwelling.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a three-window range with 20th-century fenestration, including two- and three-light casements. A buttress is located at the left end, and there are pigeon holes at the rear left end. The interior has been entirely altered in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and while the roof is not accessible, the feet of the straight principals are visible.
