Description

Vale Cottage is a 17th-century farmhouse, now a house, located on the west side of Pathdown Lane, near Cross in Georgeham. The house is built of whitewashed plastered rubble and cob, with a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end. It features an axial rubble stack with slate weatherings and a lateral stack to the rear. Originally, the house likely had a 3-cell plan with a through-passage, though a doorway to the rear is now blocked and has an arched timber lintel. An additional bay, originally an outbuilding, was added to the upper end, and a former dairy is located at the lower end. Internal partitions have been altered due to later conversion into two cottages, followed by a reconversion into a single dwelling. The uphill end bay projects slightly. The two-storey asymmetrical elevation has a 2-light timber casement window to the left of the front door. The main part of the house is two storeys high with a four-window range, and features scattered 19th-century windows. There are two 20th-century doors, and a 19th-century horizontal sliding sash window at the lower end. The original roof trusses appear to be intact, although the roof space has not been inspected.
