Description

Back Lane Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an attached barn and shippon, now used as a house and garage or store. The barn and shippon likely date from the 18th century, while the house was built in the early to mid 19th century; both have been altered. The barn and shippon are constructed of random rubble with quoins and have a corrugated sheet roof. The house features coursed squared sandstone (with the rear rendered) and a stone slate roof.

The building has a linear plan that runs parallel to the road, consisting of a three-bay barn with a lean-to shippon on the right and a single-depth double-fronted house on the left, which has a small wing to its left. The house is two storeys high and has one window on the left and three on the right, with a moulded gutter cornice. The doorway has a plain surround topped with a primitive segmental pediment, and there is a narrow window above the doorway. The left side has two-light windows on each floor, while the right side has single-light windows, all of which are vertical rectangular with raised sills and plain surrounds, fitted with 20th-century small-paned top-hung casements. There are corniced chimneys on the left gable and on the ridge.

The barn on the right features a segmental-arched wagon doorway in the centre and a blocked doorway to the right, while the attached shippon has a window and a doorway at the front. The interior has not been inspected. The farmhouse forms a group with Cherryfold on the opposite side of the road.
