Description

The base of the former Butter Cross in Habergham Eaves is a Grade II listed structure, possibly dating from the late medieval period. It is a roughly cubical stone block that is partially sunk into the surface of a field. The upper surface features a square housing for a shaft in its center. Although it now stands alone in the field, there is a hollow way approximately 20 meters to the west that runs in a roughly north-south direction. This site may be connected to other ancient crosses in the Burnley area, as noted in Bennett's "History of Burnley." Additionally, it is said to have served as a gathering place for Chartists in the 19th century.
