Description
29 and 31 Rose Hill Road is a pair of cottages, now combined into one dwelling, built around 1850 to 1860 and altered since. The exterior features scored stucco, likely over sandstone rubble, and a slate roof in a cottage ornee style. The building has a rectangular plan with a single-depth, two-unit front range and coupled back extensions. It stands at two low storeys with a symmetrical façade featuring one window on the left and one on the right. The design includes a plinth, raised rusticated quoins, oversailing eaves, and two gablets. Each floor has two cross-windows; the ground-floor windows are square with square lights and moulded hood-moulds, while the upper windows have gablets above them and all feature diamond lattice glazing. There is a ridge chimney, and the gable walls have former doorways that have been altered into windows, with the left doorway (No. 31) now featuring a wooden canopy. The doorway for No. 29 has been moved to the side of the back extension and includes a 20th-century glazed porch. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, these cottages served as staff accommodation for the Rose Hill estate.
