Description

Numbers 171, 173, and 175 are a terrace of three townhouses built around 1850-1860, with Nos 171 and 173 currently serving as a school and No. 175 unoccupied at the time of survey in 1991. The houses feature sandstone ashlar construction and a slate roof, designed in a late Georgian style. They have a double-depth plan, with each house being single-fronted and Nos 171 and 173 sharing adjoining halls, along with large back extensions.

The exterior consists of three storeys over cellars, with a window arrangement of 2+2+2. The buildings have a plinth, raised quoins, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course. The doorways of Nos 171 and 173 are framed by architraves with engaged columns topped with papyrus-leaf capitals, while No. 175 features a Tuscan pilastered architrave, all adorned with plain friezes and moulded cornices. No. 171 has a glazed and panelled door, No. 173 has 20th-century glazing in place of the door, and all doors have overlights. Each house has a two-storey canted bay with cornices at both levels and segmental-headed sashed windows. Most windows have raised sills and plain reveals, with most being sashed without glazing bars; however, the ground and first-floor windows of No. 175 are either boarded or damaged. There are corniced stone chimneys at the junction of Nos 173 and 175, as well as at each gable. The pedimental gables at both ends contain blank shields. The full-height back extensions have sashed windows, mostly with 12 panes.

The front gardens are terraced and feature baffle entries formed by front walls and inner retaining walls made of coursed squared sandstone, with ramped coping on the front walls. There are three pairs of square gate piers with pyramidal caps. The interior was not inspected.
