North Warehouse To Rear Of Wharf Masters House At Manchester Road Canal Wharf

The North Warehouse, located behind the Wharf Master's House at Manchester Road Canal Wharf in Burnley, is a canal warehouse that has been converted into a store. It was built between 1841 and 1844 and is the second warehouse constructed on this site, although it has undergone some alterations. The building features coursed squared sandstone with raised rusticated quoins and a slate roof. It has a rectangular five-bay layout that runs parallel to the canal and stands four storeys tall, with two widely spaced symmetrical windows. A prominent full-width canopy extends over the lower two floors, supported by cantilevered cast-iron I-beams and short cast-iron columns. There is a central four-stage loading bay, which is currently blocked with 20th-century brick, and a hoist housing that rises through the canopy. The square windows are also blocked. The rear of the building has a late 19th-century hipped canopy and a storeyed hoist housing, along with blocked windows. The interior has not been inspected. This warehouse is an important part of a group that includes the Wharf Master's House and Toll Office, an attached warehouse, a central warehouse, a stable block on the east side of the yard, and the boundary wall and gateways to the yard.
