Description

Nos. 72 and 74 on Manchester Road are two town houses, built around 1830 to 1845, which have since been converted into offices. They are constructed from chisel-dressed sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate roof. Each house is double-depth and single-fronted, featuring individual back extensions. The buildings stand two storeys high over cellars and have a total of four windows across the front, with a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways are positioned to the right and have enriched architraves, which include reeded jambs, geometrical patterned friezes, and cornices supported by foliated consoles. The windows have raised sills and plain surrounds; the windows at No. 74 are sashed without glazing bars, while those at No. 72 have 20th-century top-hung casements. A ridge chimney stack is located at the junction of the two houses, with a double chimney stack on the left gable and a single stack on the right gable, all featuring cornices. At the rear, there are back extensions at the basement and ground-floor levels, with round-headed stair-windows that have small panes and intersecting diagonal glazing bars in the heads. The interior has not been inspected. These buildings form a group with Nos. 85 and 85A (the Toll House) and the boundary wall to the canal warehouse yard on the opposite side of the road.
