Boundary Wall To Manchester Road Canal Wharf

The boundary wall and gate piers to the Manchester Road Canal Wharf in Burnley were likely built around 1800 and have been altered since. The wall is made of rock-faced sandstone rubble arranged in sloping courses, topped with rounded coping. It measures approximately 15 meters in length, with both ends curving back towards the entrances of the yard. At the right-hand (north) end, there is a pair of gate piers that stand about 2 meters high. These massive square gate piers feature a chamfered plinth, a plain cornice, and an unusual deeply-undercut cap. This boundary wall is part of an important group at the wharf, which includes the Wharfmaster's House and Toll Office (Nos 85 & 85A), three warehouses (south, centre, and north), and a stable block on the north side of the yard.
