Description

Number 79 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church is a Methodist chapel, now serving as a Baptist church and Sunday School, built around 1835 for the Protestant Wesleyan Methodist Society. It underwent alterations between 1868 and 1871 by the Baptist Society, with the Sunday School added in the later 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared dressed sandstone with freestone dressings and has a slate roof.

The structure has a rectangular plan that is oriented at right angles to the street, with the Sunday School attached at the rear. It is two storeys high and features a symmetrical facade with three bays. The outer bays are narrower and slightly projected, all topped with an open-pedimental gabled form. The central section has full-width steps leading to coupled entrances and windows set within a two-storeyed round-headed architrave, which is enhanced by superimposed pilasters, a moulded cornice over the ground floor, and a moulded head with a panelled keystone. The doorways feature moulded surrounds, recessed panelled doors, and overlights with coloured margin panes. The upper windows are sashed and also have similar margin panes. The outer bays contain tall eight-pane round-headed windows with coloured panes and margins, along with panelled keystones.

Adjoining to the left is Number 79, which slightly overlaps the left bay. It has a three-storey single-window gabled facade with a doorway to the right in a plain surround, and windows that have raised sills, plain surrounds, and altered glazing. The side walls of the church feature tall round-headed windows, with five located on the north side. At the rear, the Sunday School, built at right angles to the church, has a two-storey three-window gabled facade, which includes a large cross-window in the center of the upper floor. The interior has not been inspected.
