Description

A warehouse, likely built in the early to mid-19th century, stands on the canalside at the junction with Manchester Road in Burnley. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with large quoins at the rear; the front elevation is now rendered and painted. It has a stone slate roof. The rectangular plan is parallel to the canal, which borders the north side. The warehouse is three stories high with a basement and attic, featuring a 5:1:1 window arrangement. The sixth bay has three-stage loading doorways, which have been altered and reduced to windows, along with moulded jambs and punch-dressed quoining. A gabled dormer in the roof accommodates an opening for a hoist jib. The windows are vertical-rectangular with raised sills, plain surrounds, and altered glazing, with low attic windows directly above the lintels on the top floor. The rear elevation has a 3:1:3 window arrangement, with four-stage loading doorways in the center, all with plain surrounds but now reduced and altered to windows. There are also square windows on all floors (some blocked), and attic windows similar to those at the front. The interior remains uninspected. The warehouse forms a group with an industrial building attached to the south-east end and with the Manchester Road Canal Bridge and canal wharf buildings located on the opposite side of Manchester Road.
