Stable block for draught horses at canal wharf, now store. c1870-80, for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company; altered. Red brick in English bond, hipped slate roofs on 2 levels with red ridge tiles. Linear plan formed by single-depth main range with axial side wings. 2-storey 3-window main range, single-storey 2-and 3-window wings; with saw-toothed eaves bands and segmental-headed openings to all portions. The main range has a doorway offset left of centre with a shallow overlight, and above this a loading doorway with a raised stone sill and a gablet over it with hoist-jib; one window on each floor to left and right, and at the right-hand end a window and doorway at ground floor, the latter with a recessed 4-pane overlight. Ridge chimney offset right. The left wing has a doorway flanked by widely-spaced windows; the right-hand wing has inserted garage doors between the windows (probably replacing a smaller doorway) and another doorway at the right-hand end with a 2-pane overlight. Most openings boarded or damaged at time of inspection (1991). INTERIOR: not accessible at time of survey, but known to have many original features, including ramped stall partitions with cast-iron columnar kicking posts, and iron hay racks. HISTORY: rebuild of earlier stables. Forms part of an important group at this wharf, including Nos 85 & 85A (Wharfmaster's House and Toll Office, qv), and 3 warehouses (south, centre and north (qv)). Included for group value.
