Centre Warehouse To Rear Of Wharf Masters House At Manchester Road Canal Wharf

The Centre Warehouse located at the rear of the Wharf Master's House on Manchester Road Canal Wharf is a canal warehouse, likely built in the mid-19th century. It is the third warehouse constructed on this site, bridging the gap between the first and second warehouses. The building features a coursed squared sandstone rear wall and south gable, topped with a slate roof. It has a trapeziform plan and is a high single-storey open-fronted structure, notable for its prominent full-width canopy supported by four full-height cast-iron columns with an I-beam "arcade plate" and a strapped queen-strut roof. The rear of the warehouse includes two altered wagon doorways. The interior has not been inspected. This warehouse is an important part of a group that includes the Wharf Master's House, the Toll Office, an attached warehouse, a north warehouse, a stable block on the east side of the yard, and the boundary wall and gateways to the yard.
