Description
The Scott Monument in Scott Park is a Grade II listed structure located in Burnley. It commemorates Alderman John Hargreaves Scott, who donated land for the creation of the park. The monument, dated 1895 on the south side, is made of sandstone ashlar, featuring some polished pink granite and originally included a marble bust, which was missing at the time of the 1991 survey. Designed in a Jacobean/Renaissance style, it has a square plan and resembles a large, elaborate tester. The monument features square panelled clasping pilasters on the plinth, round-headed arches on each side with panelled pilasters and a banded head, and three polished granite colonnettes at each corner. These support a highly decorative entablature with vase finials at the corners and a central octagon from which an octagonal pillar rises. This pillar has a moulded cap topped with a flaming urn finial supported by S-shaped brackets. Under the canopy, the centre of the plinth has a square panelled pedestal intended for the bust of Alderman Scott. The north and south sides of the plinth display lettered plaques that record the benefaction and the date the park was opened.
