Description

This is a row of three small houses located on the west side of Newport, Barnstaple, dating to the early 19th century. The houses are built with mass wall construction; numbers 36 and 38 have a roughcast finish, while number 37 is stuccoed and has been blocked up. They have natural slate roofs with gabled ends, and stacks with brick shafts featuring platbands and some old terracotta pots. The main ranges are single-depth and two rooms wide. Number 36 has a rear wing at a right angle, while numbers 37 and 38 have two-storey rear lean-to additions.

The houses are arranged in three symmetrical, three-window ranges. Number 36 features a later ground-floor bay and a central recessed six-panel front door with glazed upper panes. All windows are one-over-one pane sashes, including a small bay window to the ground floor left, which has a lean-to slate roof and paired sashes. Number 37 has a similar front door. The windows have been replaced with plastic, but likely remain within their original window surrounds. Number 38 has a 20th-century timber front door with a sloping, slated porch hood, and twelve-pane sashes with a blind recess over the front door. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

Number 38 has garden railings with spear finials. The houses have group value with number 53 Newport Road, which adjoins number 38 to the right.
