Description

Number 53 is a house located at the end of a terrace on Newport Road in Barnstaple, dating from the early 19th century. It features solid roughcast walls and a hipped slated roof. The building is two storeys high with a one-window range facing Newport Road and South Street, plus an additional window on the splayed corner. The corner doorway is bead-moulded and has a four-panelled door, with the panels flush and bordered by raised moulding, which appears to be a 19th-century feature. To the right of the doorway is a small, late 19th-century brick extension that seems to be part of the same build as the shop front at Number 54; this extension has a four-panelled door, with the top two panels now glazed. The ground-storey window to the left and all three upper-storey windows have six-paned sashes. The interiors have not been inspected. The property also includes area railings with spearheads on the uprights. Number 53 forms the end of a terrace that includes Numbers 36 and 38 South Street.
