Description
Number 71 is a house located at the end of a row on St Thomas Street in Wells, dating from the 18th century. The building is rendered and colourwashed over local rubble, featuring a clay pantiled roof that continues to the west and has a coped gable to the east, along with brick end chimney stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a single bay.
The exterior includes sash windows with 16 panes in plain openings, which have exposed sash boxes. The lower window is wider, and to the left of it, there is a half-glazed door set in a plain opening, accessed by two steps.
Although the interior has not been inspected, there are notable subsidiary features. Extending from both corners of the house and returning along the front boundary about 2 meters from the house, there is a low random stone wall with ashlar coping. This wall has a gap opposite the entrance door, enhancing the setting of the house and contributing positively to the streetscape. The roof of Number 71 continues from Number 69 to the north.
