Description

This is a building of two houses, numbers 38 and 40, located on South Street. It likely originated as a timber-framed structure, possibly dating to the 16th century, and has a tiled roof. Number 38 has a front facade dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, constructed of stucco with a band and capped parapet. Number 40 displays a 19th-century front, rendered in roughcast, and a plastered side wall to the south. Number 38 features four windows containing sash windows without glazing bars, set within reveals. Number 40 has two tiers of two-light casement windows with small gables over each. Both houses have shop fronts on the ground floor. A photograph of the property is held within the National Monuments Record. Numbers 2 to 46 (even) on South Street form a notable group.
