Description
High Down Cottages are paired cottages dating from the late 18th century. They are constructed of rendered cob and feature a hipped thatched roof. Each cottage has two principal heated rooms and shares a central stack, with a rear wing on each side, creating a half H shape. The main elevation is two storeys high with six windows. The central two bays project forward, and the windows are six-pane sashes. There is a door in a gable porch in bays two and five; the left door is a half-glazed plank, while the right door is an original plank. The cottages have a central paired stack and a tall external stack with offsets at each gable end, with brick tops, the right side being lower. There is a bread oven beside the stack. The rear elevation has modern porches added to the wings and an outshut that closes off the recessed centre. Inside, there is a plain open well stair with stick balusters leading to the first-floor landing, and the roof features principal rafters. The interior space is not accessible, and the right-hand cottage has been largely altered.
