Description
Tower Farm House is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with possibly earlier fabric concealed within. It features a rendered stone and cob construction topped with a bitumenised slate roof, which is half-hipped at the left end and gable-ended at the right. A small stack is located at the angle of the right end front, while a lateral brick stack at the rear heats the lower end and is enclosed in a slated outshut. There is also an axial brick stack that formerly backed onto a cross-passage, but the passage partition has been removed, and a window has been inserted in the former cross-passage doorway.
The house has a small lobby entry at the lower end, with three rooms arranged in a line and a stair turret that extends as an outshut to the rear of the hall. It is two storeys high and has a four-window range, featuring three sashes with margin glazing bars on each floor, along with a two-light casement with six panes per light above another two-light casement with two panes per light at the right end.
Inside, there is 19th-century joinery at the lower end and a roughly chamfered beam at the upper end. A twin flight of stairs leads to the stair turret. One 17th-century roof truss remains, characterized by straight principals with a lap-jointed collar and trenches for three tiers of purlins, which have since been removed. This truss is closed off with a lath, cob, and plaster partition, while the remaining roof trusses have been replaced.
