Description
East Kerscott is a house that was originally built in the 17th century and later remodeled with its roof raised around 1830 to 1840. The exterior features painted rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof that has gable ends. There are twin stacks at the left gable end, a rendered stack at the right gable end, and a lateral hall stack at the rear, which has offsets and a tapered cap, all enclosed by a 19th-century two-storey outshut.
The house has a layout of three rooms with a cross-passage, which was likely once a through-passage plan. This layout was significantly expanded in the 19th century with the addition of a two-storey outshut and a two-storey gabled dairy wing at the rear right end. The building stands two storeys high and features a four-window range with 16 paned hornless sash windows, most of which still have their original glass. There is an off-centre porch supported by plain unmoulded clasping pilasters, leading to a six-panelled inner door. A fire insurance plaque from the "West of England, Exeter" is located between the central first-floor windows.
Inside, the house has wide span 19th-century roof trusses, and much of the 19th-century joinery remains, with most doorways featuring two-panelled doors. The inner room has a marble chimneypiece with a tiled surround. The outshut includes a three-ringed creamery with a lime-ash floor, and the dairy fittings are intact, including a large central slated chest cover for the well.
