Description

Horridge Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century, with possible earlier origins and later additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features rendered cob walls and an asbestos slate roof that is gabled to the right and hipped to the left. It has three brick stacks: one axial and one at each gable end.

The farmhouse has a three-room-and-through-passage plan, although the original position of the passage is unclear. The passage between the center and right-hand room is likely an insertion, and the hall stack is located at the opposite end. There are two stair projections at the rear, one behind the left-hand room and one behind the central room. The two rear outshuts date from the 18th to 19th centuries.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front and a shallow hall projection to the left of center. The first-floor windows are 19th-century three- and four-light small-paned casements, while the ground floor features 20th-century one-, three-, and four-light casements. There is a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right of center. The rear elevation has two outshuts, with the earlier one likely to the left.

Inside, the hall contains an open fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has run-out stops. There is a chamfered cross beam with ogee stops, and a similar beam in the inner room. The winder stairs are located in the projection at the rear of the hall, while the other staircase is blocked. The roof trusses are probably from the 19th century and consist of straight principals resting on the wall-plate.
