Description
Blacksmith’s Cottage is a late 16th-century cottage, potentially with earlier origins, and includes a 20th-century addition. It is constructed of rendered cob with a gable ended slate roof and a brick axial stack. The original layout isn't fully evident but likely comprised two or three rooms, possibly truncated at the left-hand end. The central room is large and heated, with the axial stack located at its left end, extending to an unheated room beyond. A very narrow room originally heated by a gable end stack is situated at the right end of the large room; however, it may be that both the stack and the partition wall separating it from the main room are later additions. A flat-roofed addition is present at the left-hand end.
The front elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a two-window arrangement with early 20th-century two-light casement windows, and a single light on the ground floor to the left. A gabled porch, also from the 20th century, is positioned to the right of centre, incorporating a part-glazed door. Inside the main room, there is an open fireplace with a narrow, chamfered wooden lintel and straight-cut stops. A chamfered cross beam with pyramid stops is located above the partition into the small room. One roof timber has a slightly curved foot, and another is jointed at the front into a post descending into the wall. Access to the roof space is not available.
